Around 9000 B.C. hunter/gathers in Mesopotamia and surrounding areas were beginning to settle permanent villages which were the precursors to later "cities". Two of the earliest were Jericho ans Catal Huyuk. The neighborhood around the "original" Jericho is occupied to this day, nearly 10,000 years since its inception.
