It's easy to see the natural power of Sol Indiges to attract worship in the summer heat. The name of Sol Indiges suggests that he was a native god, or ancestral god, not to be confused with Sol Invictus, a Syrian import of the late 3rd century. He had a shrine at Lavinium long before he became identified with the Greek Helios or Phoebus Apollo. King Tatius is said to have dedicated altars to both Sol and Luna, and they had a temple near the Circus Maximus. The Sun and Moon will be honored jointly at a festival on August 28 as well.
