    SLL news

    Cari commilitones Linguae Latinae!

Those in this school carrying a member level higher than level 2 recently received a letter in thier AW message box containing some ideas and plans for the near future of the Schola Linguae Latinae. Some of them are in the process of being tested, worked on or already being carried out.

First of all, our AW member Bryce Yupanqui made a Latin Grammar Quiz to go, which is now on trial in Tanaquil's Journal (Acta Tanaquilis) in her domus and which will be added as a nice quiz to go to test your knowledge of Latin as soon as some minor additions have been made! On behalf of the Schola, thanks a lot for your great work, Bryce!!!

Secondly, the matter of the member participation. Until now, the higher levelled members (4 to 6) and the "members" and "membra" (level 2) were ranked according to their participation rate and knowledge level of the Latin language. This system, however, doesn't seem to work quite well anymore, because there are members who have a good knowledge of Latin, but can only post, not vote, edit, etcetera. Subsequently, some people have been listed as grammatici, scribae and the like, who haven't really participated in the School's proceedings. It is time to rearrange some of the names according to their participation rate. The levels have been not only renamed, but also partially relevelled: level 1 (read only) are the "Aspirantes" (old name: Lector); level 2 (post) are the "Tirones" (old name: Member); level 3 (vote) are the "Discipuli" (old name: Membrum); level 4 (write): Claviger, Scribae (old name: Scriba); level 5 (edit): Grammatici (old name: grammaticus), Magister exordinatus, Magister Linguarum Romanarum; level 6 (delete): Praeceptor. Within the next couple of days, people will be moved around a bit through the range of levels, but NO ONE WILL BE THROWN OUT OF THE SLL!! After having shown the readiness, not only to be a passive student downloading course lessons, exercises and translation texts, but also to be an active member and contribute in the posting, a member can be upgraded. The level 5 members are entitled to upgrade the lower level members, the level 6 members are entitled to upgrade members into the levels 5 and (eventually) 6.

The course, exercises, translations, LC and other features: I am working on completing the Latin Grammar Course as soon as I can. Excercises, translation texts and commentaries can be provided by other advanced latinists, classicists and grammar teachers within the Schola as well. I would enjoy to see some more patricipation into the LITTERATVRA CLASSICA (LC) project. It's your game, classicists and advanced latinists, so don't hesitate or don't be shy to post!

Seems that Lady Tanaquil is moving pretty fast in time, eh Patraites? Obviously not, but a slip of the keyboard. I edited the rather stupid remark and put the right year on.

Good to see you back, Petraites and with a book as well!
Why not post the details on the board for information about Latin courses etc.?

        Cheers!

    • Changes in 2004

        Dear commilitones,

Now that 2003 has come to an end and the Schola Linguae Latinae has exisited for more than a year in AW, some changes have been planned to be put through in the new year, starting January 2004. Then, the leadership of the SLL will be expanded with two more citizens and members of AW/SLL and the SLL leadership will from then on consist of Tanaquil Sergius, Aulus Sergius and Pomponia Tullius.
Now that SLL has become the largest group of AW and a very important group for the site as well, it is time to put through some changes and innovations to make SLL not only a remarkable group, but also a more easy group to be.
A more elaborate description of all the aimed plans and changes will be posted later. The main aim is to make SLL more accessible by means of a group's search engine, to make the finding of grammar and literature details more easy and to develop a system of easily doing and correcting exercises. Next to this, ways will be developed to increase the member participation in our school.

For now, my new colleagues and I wish you a good New Year's Eve and a peaceful start of 2004!

        Tanaquil Sergius,
        h.t. Scholae Praeceptrix

Blimey - last night was one hell of a Hogmanay party & now I wake to find I have lost an entire year! I'm gonna have to pack in the booze...

Also, I have recently acquired a rare book, inter war years, entitled "Beginners Church Latin" (that is ENGLISH Catholic inter-war etc etc, you see why I class it rare) & it would probably not be welcome here by the estimable Tanaquil.

So if anyone is interested, I could scan the occasional lesson & post it on my own site. Let this old Recusant know, ok?

        In Roma
